Ever since electricity was invented, the major sources of power generation systems include thermal power plants and nuclear power plants.
Nearly 75% of the total power generated on the earth is done with non-renewable sources. Both the thermal and the nuclear power plants are usually far off from residential areas. This is because of the pollution they cause. The nuclear reactors are even more dangerous because of their toxic radioactive emissions. This being the fact, to transmit power to residential areas, large amount of infrastructure has been employed. Miles and miles of power lines and insulations to prevent electric shock; imagine the amount of cost that would be required to manage and maintain these power lines. This obviously expensive cost is expended from the pockets of the common people who use electricity. Why wouldn't our power bills be stout?
Another factor to consider is the reliability. A power station because of its huge size is tough to maintain and may suffer from frequent faults. If the fault causes even a one second shutdown tremendous amount of power loss will occur. With the diminishing resources of natural gas and coal, how long can the power plants continue to run is anybody's guess!
