Solar Heating for Pools
Solar heating for pools is provided by having a large set of solar hot water panels on your roof, and using an
electric pump to circulate your swimming-pool water up through the panels and back down into your pool.
Some heating systems for swimming pools use big panels, while others use a dark colored mesh of plastic tubes
and hose to create a flow of water over the hot tiles of your roof. The dark tubing absorbs heat from the sun and
warms the water, while heat from the hot roofing tiles also adds slightly to the warmth of the water pipes.
Both solar swimming pool heating systems require an electric pump to drive the cold water up to the solar
heating panels where it gets hot, and force it all the way back to the swimming pool and/or spa pool.
There is no doubt that adding a pool solar heat system is a significant capital investment, far more than adding
a solar hot water system for domestic use, for hot showers and washing. But having a solar-heater pool at home will
allow you, your family and close friends to enjoy swimming and socializing in and around your swimming pool for
several more weeks each and every year.
And once your solar heating for pools system has been installed, your running costs are just a few cents a day
for the mains electricity charges.
But heating your pool water in solar piping or panels on the roof is not the only way to solar heat a pool.
There's a way to do it that has no moving parts and doesn't even need electricity.
